The CD40106 has six little circuits inside it, called Schmitt triggers. Each one can become its own oscillator just by adding a resistor and a capacitor. So with one 40106 chip, you can make six separate oscillators. You now can mix those oscillators together, shape their waveforms or let them interact with each other.
